|YOU'RE RIGHT, I LOVE A BANJO
Michael Weinblatt grew up in a suburb of New York City, listening to a wide range of music
including rock and roll, country, classical and opera. Sometime during his high school years he
heard a bluegrass banjo. He was immediately hooked on the instrument and the music.
He started collecting everything he could get his hands on by the likes of Flatt and Scruggs, Doc
Watson, the Country Gazette, the Bluegrass Cardinals and Joe Val to name a few. He got a used
banjo while earning an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and taught himself to play. While
studying for his M.D. Degree in Syracuse, he picked in a band with a group of other medical
students. Following graduation during his medical residency, and his cardiology fellowship on
Long Island, he played only sporadically. About thirteen years ago, after moving to Florida he
dusted off his old banjo and started playing regularly with some of the guys who now make up
The Shade Tree Pickers. While he actively practices cardiology in Boca Raton, he credits his
playing with the band for keeping him sane. (His band mates may disagree with his claims of
sanity, but after all, he is a banjo player!)
He is married and has two children.
