The Bluegrass Music Community in South
Florida has lost a beloved musician and friend.
Dan Barrow, the leader and bass player for the
“Shade Tree Pickers” Bluegrass Band passed
away at his home in Plantation Florida on
February 11, 2016 after   battling   cancer.

Well known for his fierce and hard driving bass
playing, his unique “field hollering”  singing style,
and his unforgettable infectious smile, Dan
delighted Bluegrass audiences in South Florida,
young and old alike for over 35 years. At age 70
he continued to develop and arrange material for
his band and remained true in his dedication to
the traditions of Bluegrass Music.

Since the opening of the Fern Forest Nature
Center of Coconut Creek in 1985, Dan hosted
the monthly gathering of local musicians at the
Center’s Pavilion during the fall and winter
months each year.  His hospitable welcoming of
musicians of all skill levels to join in at the jam
session was instrumental in the growth and
popularity of Bluegrass Music in our community
today.

As we morn the loss of our friend and musical
comrade, the remaining members of the “Shade
Tree Pickers”   continue our efforts to maintain
Dan’s musical entertainment standards, one of
many components in his legacy that will live on
and on in our hearts.

DAN BARROW
Dan Barrow
Dan, "the old man" of the group says that bluegrass music makes you smile and you can always find him doing just that. Dan
played fiddle for three years, starting in 1978, then came across an old upright bass and an instant love was formed. Dan started
The Shade Tree Pickers in 1978 playing with friends and his son, Scott, who was seven, and played a "mean" banjo. Through the
years the band has had many different musicians, but Dan has stayed true to his fierce, and fast style of playing, and calls his
lead vocals: "Field Hollering."Bluegrass has always meant family, friends, fun and a good time; and, that's just what Dan loves
about it.
